Yobe: ADC threatens legal action over exclusion from 2026 LG election process

The Yobe state chapter of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has issued a formal letter of concern to the Yobe State Independent Electoral Commission (YSIEC), alleging a failure to communicate the guidelines and timetable for the upcoming 2026 Local Government Council Elections.

In a letter signed by the state chairman, Umar Kalli Alhaji, the ADC expressed concern and disappointment over what it described as an apparent lack of adequate notification regarding electoral activities that affect the party’s participation.

The party argued that the failure to share the election guidelines and other essential materials constitutes a threat to its constitutional rights.

The ADC has demanded that YSIEC provide clear evidence of when, how and through what official channel the information was communicated to the party.

Citing Sections 7, 40, and 197 of the Nigerian Constitution (1999 as amended), as well as the third schedule and relevant electoral laws, the ADC warned that it will pursue “every lawful avenue” to protect its rights if it is found that its participation has been prejudiced.

“We consider this matter serious because equal and meaningful access to electoral information is essential to lawful political participation,” the letter reads.

The party has now given YSIEC an ultimatum to provide an urgent explanation and take corrective action.

Should the commission fail to satisfy the ADC’s concerns, the party has threatened to pursue legal action, as well as engage the press and other media channels to voice their grievances.

Copies of the letter were sent to key state officials, including the Yobe state Attorney-General, the political adviser to the governor, and the Commissioners of Police and NSCDC, as well as the Director of the Department of State Services (DSS).

As of the time of this report, YSIEC was yet to release an official response to the ADC’s allegations.
