“I’m a pastor’s daughter who became pregnant out of wedlock by a superstar. I was mocked” — Sophia Momodu opens up at UNGA

Internet personality Sophia Momodu has opened up about becoming pregnant out of wedlock by singer, Davido, saying the experience left her mocked and without a voice despite being famous.

Speaking at Colombia University, ahead of the United Nations General Assembly High level-week. Sophia said being a pastor’s daughter who had a child outside marriage was particularly difficult because of the stigma attached to it in Nigeria.

She said, “I am a pastor’s daughter who got pregnant out of wedlock by a global superstar. And I was mocked. It was crazy. And I had to find my strength in the midst of all of that. And for the longest time, I didn’t have a voice. I was famous, I was popular, but I didn’t have a voice.”

Sophia said the negativity surrounding the story often drowned out her own voice, adding that she wanted her experience to be better understood.

She also recalled being asked by an aunt to remain silent about the issue because it was considered a topic Black women were not expected to discuss publicly.

According to her, sharing her story through different international platforms helped her realise that she was not alone, as several women reached out to share similar experiences.
