Sovereign Trust Insurance Falls 8.6% After 31% Weekly Rally
Sovereign Trust Insurance Plc fell 8.64 percent on the Nigerian Exchange (NGX) on Monday, September 21, as investors took profit following the insurer’s 30.95 percent rally in the previous week.
The company’s share price declined from N2.20 to N2.01, shedding N0.19 during Monday’s trading session and placing it among the day’s biggest decliners.
The reversal followed a strong run in the week ended September 18, when Sovereign Trust Insurance climbed from N1.68 to N2.20, representing a weekly gain of 30.95 percent.
That performance made the insurer the second-highest percentage gainer during the week, behind UPDC Real Estate Investment Trust, which advanced 34.91 percent.
Monday’s decline therefore erased part of Sovereign Trust Insurance’s previous-week advance as some investors appeared to lock in gains accumulated during the rally.
Despite falling to N2.01, the stock remained about 19.6 percent above its N1.68 opening level from the previous week, meaning a substantial portion of the earlier appreciation remained intact.
Sovereign Trust Insurance’s reversal contrasted with renewed buying in some other insurance stocks.
SUNU Assurance appreciated by the maximum 10 percent, rising from N2.80 to N3.08, while insurance stocks also featured prominently among the day’s most actively traded equities.
Mutual Benefits Assurance recorded 53.58 million shares worth N205.59 million, making it the second-most actively traded stock by volume among the equities reported for the session.
AIICO Insurance also recorded 24.38 million shares valued at N91.92 million.
The divergent performances point to selective positioning within insurance equities rather than uniform movement across the sector.
Sovereign Trust Insurance was not the only stock to encounter selling pressure on Monday.
Okomu Oil Palm dropped 10 percent from N1,418 to N1,276.20, while Custodian Investment declined 9.13 percent to N68.15.
Haldane McCall fell 8.33 percent to N3.30, while Ellah Lakes declined 5.39 percent to N7.90.
Despite the losses recorded by these stocks, the broader equities market maintained its upward momentum.
The NGX All-Share Index gained 0.14 percent to 250,156.80 points, while equity market capitalisation increased by approximately N228 billion to N162.385 trillion.
Investors exchanged 574.19 million shares worth N38.06 billion in 68,655 deals, with Zenith Bank leading market activity after 77.07 million of its shares worth N9.90 billion changed hands.
Sovereign Trust Insurance’s Monday decline highlights the profit-taking that can follow sharp short-term appreciation, with the stock surrendering part of its previous week’s 30.95 percent gain while remaining well above its level at the beginning of that rally.
