Operatives of the Lagos State Police Command’s Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU) have arrested four suspected members of the Aiye confraternity cult group and recovered a locally made Beretta pistol and a 9mm live ammunition in Mushin, Lagos state. The arrests, according to the command, followed credible intelligence on the activities of suspected cult groups operating in Mushin and adjoining communities. The Police Public Relations Officer, Lagos State Command, SP Abimbola Adebesi, disclosed this in a statement issued on Monday in Lagos According to the statement, VCRU operatives first arrested Irawo Moshod, who allegedly admitted during interrogation to being a former chairman of the Aiye confraternity cult group. Police said Moshod made useful disclosures about the alleged activities of the group, including his purported involvement in several killings within Mushin and other parts of Lagos state. Acting on information allegedly provided by the suspect, operatives proceeded to Idi-Oro, Mushin, where they recovered one locally made Beretta pistol and a 9mm live ammunition. The Command said three other suspected members of the group were subsequently arrested at Aganran by Ojuwoye. They were identified as Abayomi James, 29; Farouq Bankole, 28 and Steven Sunday, 19. “The three suspects allegedly admitted membership of the Aiye Confraternity and reportedly told investigators that the recovered firearm was obtained from one Rilwan, whom they identified as the group’s number-one member,” it said The Police said the four suspects remained in custody and were assisting investigators, while efforts were ongoing to apprehend other suspected members of the group. Commending the VCRU operatives, the Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, CP Tijani Fatai, psc, mnips, described the operation as another indication of the Command’s intelligence-driven approach to combating cultism and violent crime in the state. The Commissioner reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to dismantling criminal networks and safeguarding residents across Lagos. He also warned cultists and other criminal elements to abandon their activities or face the full weight of the law. The Command urged residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities to the Police through its emergency contact lines to enable prompt intervention.
