The Central Bank of Nigeria’s September 2026 Business Expectations Survey placed the Business Confidence Index at 13.4 points.

Businesses remained positive about the outlook, with expectations of improvement supported by stronger demand, economic diversification and better access to finance. At the same time, multiple taxation, insecurity and elevated interest rates remained among their most significant concerns.

That combination is more revealing than either figure on its own. It suggests that Nigerian businesses are not necessarily waiting for every difficulty to disappear before pursuing opportunities. Instead, many are learning to operate within a more complicated environment.

A business can believe that demand will improve and still struggle with its immediate financial obligations. It can expect stronger sales while facing higher operating costs. It can see opportunities for expansion while worrying about the cost of financing them. It can have a healthy order book and still experience pressure if money comes in later than expenses have to be paid.

This is an important distinction between business confidence and financial resilience. Confidence describes how a business views its prospects. Financial resilience describes its capacity to withstand pressure while pursuing those prospects. One is about expectation; the other is about financial structure.

A company therefore should not interpret improving sentiment as a reason to become less disciplined with its money.

Growth Opportunities Still Require Financial Capacity

When business conditions appear to be improving, the natural response is often to expand.

A company may want to increase inventory, hire additional employees, accept larger contracts, acquire equipment or enter a new market. But every growth decision creates a financial requirement before it creates a financial return.
