Sowore Demands ₦500,000 Minimum Wage for INEC Staff

Omoyele Sowore, presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), has called for a minimum wage of ₦500,000 for staff of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), insisting that fair pay is essential for credible elections in Nigeria.
In a post on his verified X account, Sowore argued that electoral integrity cannot be safeguarded by underpaid workers. His statement followed remarks by INEC Chairman, Professor Joash Amupitan, who recently lamented that the commission’s staff are among the lowest paid in the country.
Sowore, a human rights activist, declared: “No decent wages, no credible elections. Nigeria’s electoral workers must be well paid. INEC staff deserve a minimum wage of ₦500,000.
“Electoral integrity must begin with decent working conditions and a living wage for those entrusted with administering our elections.”
He further warned that if INEC staff continue to face poor treatment, he would support their right to lawful industrial action and even join them in boycotting the 2027 elections.
