Lagos: LASTMA, China deploy technology to tackle traffic congestion

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has commenced discussions with the Chinese Consulate in Lagos on a strategic partnership aimed at deploying advanced technology to tackle traffic congestion, improve road safety and strengthen traffic management across the state.

The initiative emerged during a high-level working visit by the General Manager of LASTMA, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, and senior management officials to the Consulate General of the People’s Republic of China in Lagos.

The LASTMA delegation was received by the Chinese Consul General, Her Excellency Yan Yuqing.

The meeting focused on the possibility of leveraging Chinese expertise and technological innovations to address the increasingly complex traffic challenges confronting Lagos, a rapidly expanding megacity with a huge and growing vehicular population.

Bakare-Oki said the increasing volume of vehicles, commercial activities and daily movement of people in Lagos had made it imperative for the state to embrace smarter and more technology-driven approaches to traffic management.

He said LASTMA was particularly interested in technologies capable of improving real-time traffic monitoring, incident detection, surveillance, enforcement and communication with road users.

According to him, the agency is seeking to deepen its deployment of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS), artificial intelligence, data-driven enforcement, automated incident detection and other modern traffic-control technologies.

The LASTMA boss stressed that the objective was not merely to acquire technology but to ensure that such innovations were effectively integrated into the peculiar transportation environment of Lagos.

He added that collaboration with international institutions and technology-driven transportation authorities could provide LASTMA with access to tested solutions, expertise and knowledge required to improve operational efficiency.

Bakare-Oki also identified capacity building and knowledge transfer as critical components of the proposed partnership, saying LASTMA personnel must be adequately trained to operate and manage sophisticated traffic-management systems.

Responding, Yan Yuqing welcomed the initiative, stressing the importance of strengthening institutional and professional exchanges between Lagos authorities and relevant Chinese counterparts in transportation, urban mobility and technological innovation.

The discussions also covered intelligent transportation systems, traffic data management, road safety, technological capacity building, operational efficiency and innovative solutions to urban mobility challenges.

Bakare-Oki reiterated LASTMA’s commitment to building strategic relationships with credible local and international partners to deliver safer roads, smoother traffic flow and faster response to traffic incidents.

The initiative, according to LASTMA, is expected to contribute to the agency’s transition towards a more intelligent, data-driven and technology-enabled traffic management system capable of responding more effectively to the daily mobility challenges faced by Lagos residents.

Other senior officials at the meeting included Mr. Akeem Adeosun, Mr. Jimmy Awoyemi, Mr. Jubril Oshodi, Ms. Folake Ayeni, Mrs. Afe Babalola, Mr. Akinpelu Ayuba, Mr. Mohammed Giwa and Mr. Adebayo Taofiq, Director, Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department.
