The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has announced plans to temporarily shut the runway at Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport, Owerri, Imo State, for approximately 25 days from October 20, 2026, to carry out repairs and resurfacing.

The proposed closure, which is subject to final confirmation, is intended to address deteriorating sections of the runway, including potholes and extensive surface cracks reportedly worsened by recent heavy rainfall.

In a statement signed by the Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Henry Agbebire, FAAN said the rehabilitation had become necessary to restore the runway to a safer operational condition and improve airport infrastructure ahead of increased passenger traffic during the Christmas season.

The authority explained that the planned intervention would involve pavement repairs, treatment of cracks and resurfacing of affected sections of the runway to improve its condition and support safer airport operations.

Runway extension planned

Beyond the immediate repairs, the rehabilitation project is expected to include an extension of the runway to enable the airport to accommodate wide-body aircraft as passenger numbers and flight traffic to the region increase.

FAAN said the proposed extension would improve the airport’s capacity to handle larger aircraft, enhance passenger comfort and facilitate a smoother travel experience for air travellers using the facility.

The project is also expected to strengthen the airport’s infrastructure as demand for air transport in the South-East region grows, although the authority did not provide further details about the extension’s scope or completion timeline.

Passengers advised to contact airlines

FAAN has advised passengers planning to travel through Owerri during the proposed closure period to contact their respective airlines for updates on flight schedules and possible alternative travel arrangements.

The authority said it would continue to engage relevant stakeholders and communicate the confirmed closure and reopening dates once the arrangements had been finalised.

It also appealed to passengers, airlines and other airport users to cooperate with the authority during the rehabilitation exercise, stressing that the intervention was aimed at improving the airport’s operational condition.

FAAN reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining safe, efficient and reliable airport operations across the country, adding that the planned works would address the runway’s deteriorating condition and support improved infrastructure at the Owerri airport.
