Zamfara Assembly crisis: Any suspended lawmaker who apologises will be reinstated – Speaker
The Speaker of the Zamfara State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Bilyaminu Ismail Moriki, has said that any suspended lawmaker who apologises for his wrongdoing will be reinstated to continue his legislative duties.
Blueprint reports that eight lawmakers were suspended on February 26, 2024 over allegations of gross misconduct.
Hon. Moriki stated this in Gusau Monday while reacting to the recent defection of eight suspended members of the Assembly from the All Progressives Congress (APC).
He said their exit from the ruling APC does not affect the work of the State House of Assembly under his leadership.
He added that the House remains stable, functional and united.
He explained that the doors of the Assembly are still open for reconciliation, citing example of two other lawmakers who were earlier suspended but tendered apology and were instantly reinstated.
According to him, the suspension of the eight lawmakers which took effect on 26th February, 2024 was due to gross misconduct, conspiracy, contempt of the House and convening an illegal sitting, not because of politics.
Hon. Moriki described their recent defection as a calculated attempt to create false impression of crisis in the Assembly.
He said on 13th May, 2026, the House approved extension of their suspension for another legislative session due to unresolved disciplinary issues and pending criminal complaint bordering on burglary, forcible entry and destruction of public property before a court of competent jurisdiction.
He reaffirmed that change of political platform does not invalidate disciplinary matters or pending legal proceedings.
The Speaker further reaffirmed the Assembly’s commitment to legislative integrity and its support for the policies of the state government.
He called on the public to disregard insinuations that the House is in disarray, saying plenary was held last Tuesday and Monday, 5th October, 2026, and the House will reconvene tomorrow.
