Alake at 70 worked for democracy, delivers results in public service — Tinubu
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has congratulated the Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dele Alake, on his 70th birthday, praising his contributions to journalism, the struggle for democracy and public service.
In a tribute issued on Monday, the President described the minister as a trusted confidant whose forthrightness, integrity and dedication had defined their relationship over several decades.
“In my several decades of very close relationship with Dele Alake, I have known him as a steady hand, a forthright, upright, loyal, and committed ally. He is straight and unequivocal. You always know where he stands on issues,” he said.
The President joined Alake’s family, friends and associates in celebrating his entry into the ranks of septuagenarians, saying his professional career and public service record demonstrated hard work, excellence and a determination to deliver results.
He said the pursuit of equity and social justice had remained central to the minister’s endeavours.
Recalling Alake’s journalism career, the President described him as an accomplished journalist and editor who courageously challenged the problems confronting Nigeria.
He said Alake played a prominent role in opposing military dictatorship, defending human rights and demanding the restoration of democratic governance.
“During Nigeria’s darkest hours under military rule, he was a journalist of conscience who fought on the front lines against dictatorship and abuse of human rights, and for the restoration of democratic governance,” he said.
The President also commended Alake’s eight years as Commissioner for Information and Strategy during his administration as Lagos state governor, saying his creativity and enterprise helped redefine government information management and public communication.
The President said the minister’s ability to produce results in unfamiliar areas had become evident in his stewardship of the solid minerals sector.
According to him, Alake’s work as minister continues to attract admiration within Nigeria and abroad, while his chairmanship of the Africa Minerals Strategy Group demonstrates the confidence of his counterparts across the continent.
He prayed for more years in good health for Alake as he continued to serve God, Nigeria and humanity.
“Happy birthday and many happy returns to my confidante, brother, and buddy,” the President said.
