Dorcas Gwani of the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN) has emerged Chairperson of the Correspondents Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Plateau State Council, after defeating her closest challenger in a keenly contested election in Jos.

Gwani polled 25 votes to beat Douglas Francis of Arise News, who scored nine votes, while Mrs Lola Bello of the Voice of Nigeria (VON) was returned unopposed.

The election, conducted by the National Secretariat of the NUJ, Zone D, was held at the NUJ Secretariat in Jos following months of controversy that trailed the chapel’s election scheduled for mid-July 2026.

The election Committee led by Miss Patience Aliyu of NAN, with Mr. James Abraham of The Punch and Mr. Pam Musa of The Telegraph, formally declared Mrs. Gwani as the winner.

“Mrs Dorcas Gwani scored 25 votes,  against Mr. Douglas Frances 9 votes, while one vote was invalid. Mrs. Dorcas Gwani is hereby declared winner of the election,” Miss Aliyu declared.

She also declared Mrs Lola Bello as Secretary of the  Chapel, having contested unopposed.

In her acceptance speech, Gwani commended the electoral committee and members of the chapel for their participation, pledging to promote unity and advance the collective interests of journalists.

She said her administration would work to chart a new course for the chapel while urging members to put their differences behind them.

“We need to work together to strengthen the union and advance the welfare and professional interests of journalists in Plateau State,” she said.

Gwani also pledged to promote an inclusive administration and pursue initiatives capable of improving the welfare and professional standing of members.

She urged members to support the new leadership and contribute ideas that would help reposition the chapel.

The newly elected chairman thanked the electoral committee for providing an opportunity for members to exercise their franchise, saying the outcome should mark the beginning of a new chapter for the chapel.

She called for reconciliation among members and pledged to work with all stakeholders in the interest of unity and the growth of the Correspondents Chapel.
