Tragedy As Twin Medical Sisters Die Of Sickle Cell Disease
Tragedy, at the weekend, struck a family in Yobe State as their twin daughters, a medical doctor, Dr Hadiya Usman, and a pharmacist, Dr Aidah Usman, died days apart after battling sickle cell disease.
It was gathered that while Hadiya was undergoing her internship at the Federal Medical Centre, Nguru, in Nguru Local Government Area of the state, her twin sister, Aidah, was working as a pharmacist at the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital before their sudden deaths over the weekend.
The late twin sisters were daughters of the Medical Director of the Federal Medical Centre, Nguru, Prof Hadiza Abdullahi Usman.
According to a family member of the deceased, Ibrahim Auwal, who confirmed the demise of the twin sisters, they died a few days apart.
Auwal said Hadiyah died last Friday, while her twin sister, Aidah, followed on Sunday, after they had both had a serious battle with the sickle cell disease.
“It is a very painful development. Hadiyah passed away on Friday, and Aidah followed on Sunday. Both sisters had been battling sickle cell disease, and their deaths are a great loss, particularly to their family, friends and colleagues,” the family member said.
He noted that the sudden death of the twin sisters had left the family devastated.

Auwal described the deceased twin sisters as hardworking young professionals whose passing shocked their loved ones.
“We are deeply saddened by what has happened. Losing the two sisters within just a few days has been extremely painful for the family. They were both dedicated to their professions and had promising futures ahead of them,” he said.
Hadiyah, it was learnt died on Friday after spending about one week on admission at FMC Nguru following a sickle cell crisis.
Aidah, her twin sister, it was gathered, was also on admission at the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital about the same period but reportedly recovered and discharged to go back home.
But surprisingly, she later died on Sunday.
The late twin sisters have already been buried according to Islamic rites.
