Kano to build 1,800 houses across 36 LGAs

The Kano State Government has announced plans to construct 50 housing units in each of the 36 local government areas outside the state capital, making a total of 1,800 houses, in an effort to address the housing deficit and provide decent accommodation for low- and middle-income earners.

The State Commissioner for Housing, Architect Ibrahim Yakubu Adamu, disclosed this during an inspection tour of major projects being executed by the administration.

Blueprint reports that the tour was organised for a delegation of the Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE), journalists and social media influencers, led by the Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Comrade Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya.

Waiya said the tour was designed to give senior editors from across the country firsthand access to the projects and enable them to obtain detailed information about their objectives, implementation and expected impact on residents, rather than relying solely on headlines, reports and photographs.

Adamu said the proposed housing programme would feature different categories of houses, including five-bedroom duplexes and three- and five-bedroom terraced units.

 He added that essential infrastructure and other facilities would be provided to transform the housing projects into complete and functional residential communities.

According to him, the initiative was aimed at extending urban development beyond Kano metropolis, reducing congestion and population pressure in the state capital, and making quality and affordable housing more accessible to residents across the state.

The delegation also inspected the Gida-Gida Mega Housing City at Rijiyar Gwan-Gwan in Dawakin Kudu Local Government Area, where 480 housing units are being constructed.

The project comprises different housing designs, including five-bedroom duplexes and three- and five-bedroom terraced houses, alongside basic infrastructure and other facilities.

From Rijiyar Gwan-Gwan, the delegation proceeded to the Gaya Emirate, where it paid a courtesy visit to the Emir of Gaya, Alhaji Dr Aliyu Ibrahim Abdulkadir.

The emir commended the visit and urged the media to intensify efforts to combat fake news, particularly as the country approaches another election cycle.

He said journalists had a major responsibility to verify information before publication, warning that the dissemination of unverified reports could fuel conflict and deepen divisions during elections.

The Deputy President of the NGE, Dr Sebastine Abu, commended the emir for the warm reception and praised the Kano Government for its interventions in education, housing and infrastructure.

The delegation later visited Northwest University, Kano, where the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Amina Salihi Bayero, said the construction of the Faculty of Humanities had reached about 90 per cent completion, while the Faculty of Science building had been completed. She said the Humanities building contained about 200 offices, 50 lecture rooms, laboratories and a 300-capacity auditorium.

Professor Bayero also disclosed that the Kano State Government had approved funds for the accreditation and approval of academic programmes offered by the university. The delegation also visited Dan’adundi  Tal’udu Bridges, where it inspected other projects in education, urban renewal and infrastructure.

The Kano State Government said the projects formed part of its broader development strategy to extend infrastructure and housing beyond the state capital, improve living conditions and promote balanced development across the state, while reducing the pressure caused by rapid population growth and congestion in Kano metropolis.
