FCT Police, Fire Service contain gas plant explosion inferno

The FCT Police and the Federal Fire Service, Sunday night succesfully contained inferno at a gas plant following an explosion, even as hunt for the erring driver is underway.

Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Josephine Adeh, in a press statement in Abuja, said: “On September 27, 2026, at about 6:30 a.m., the FCT Police Command received a distress call from a resident at Liberty Junction, Byazhin, reporting a fire outbreak at a Cooking gas sale plant nearby.

“Following receipt of the report, a Police team from the Kubwa Police Division was promptly deployed to the scene, where they were met with a raging inferno at the gas plant, which had engulfed nearby shops and other properties.

“The Police team promptly contacted the Federal Fire Service, which responded and aided in containing the fire.

Preliminary investigations by the Police team revealed that the fire outbreak was caused by the driver of an unregistered Toyota 4Runner Jeep, who was driving against traffic (one-way).

“The driver reportedly lost control of the vehicle and crashed into the nearby cooking gas plant, causing an explosion which engulfed nearby shops and other properties. The driver and occupants of the vehicle fled the scene immediately.”

The PPRO said no casualties was recorded in the explosion, adding that the Command was on the trail of the erring driver having established his identity.

She said a detailed assessment of the value of property lost in the inferno was yet to be determined.

“The Command assures residents that normalcy has been restored and residents can return to their lawful businesses. Members of the public are enjoined to remain security conscious and vigilant of their surroundings. Suspicious persons or activities should be promptly reported to the nearest police station or through the Command’s emergency numbers: 08032003913, 08028940883,” the Spokesperson added.
