FCT Police arrest mother for killing newborn with razor blade

Officers of the FCT Police Command have tried and arrested a woman for killing her newborn with razor blade and abandoning the baby in a bush at Jabi area of the FCT.

A press statement by the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Josephine Adeh, Wedenesdsy in Abuja, said: “The FCT Police Command, on October 4, 2026, at approximately 10:30PM, received a distress call reporting the discovery of an abandoned baby in a nearby bush in Jabi area of the FCT.

“Responding to the report, police operatives from Jabi Division were promptly deployed to the scene, where the lifeless body of a male infant was recovered with deep wounds on the throat and abdomen.

“The infant was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital, where he was confirmed dead by a medical team on duty.

“Following the incident, the Commissioner of Police, FCT Command, CP Ahmed Sanusi, ordered a manhunt for the person responsible for the act.
“With the assistance of members of the immediate community, one Ms Precious Yohanna, 27, a native of Riyam in Sanga Local Government Area of Kaduna state and resident of Daki-Biu/Jabi area of the FCT, was traced and arrested in connection with the crime.”

SP Adeh said, “Further investigation revealed that the suspect, who is the mother of the deceased infant, gave birth to the baby inside her room on the 3rd of October, 2026, at about 4:00 pm, after which she used a razor blade to inflict the fatal injuries on the newborn.

“The suspect freely stated that she carried out the act out of hatred for the baby’s father.”

The spokesperson further stated that, “The CP FCT Police Command, while commending members of the immediate community for their assistance in the identification and arrest of the suspect, strongly condemned the act, describing it as a grave and unacceptable violation of the sanctity of human life.

“He assures members of the public that the Command will conduct a thorough investigation into the matter and ensure that the suspect, who remains in police custody, will be charged to court upon conclusion of investigations.

“The Command enjoins members of the public to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious persons, activities or incidents to the nearest Police Station or through the Command’s emergency lines: 08028940883, 08032003913.”
