A lawyer representing convicted murderer Christa Pike disclosed that she regained consciousness in the hospital feeling “angry and confused” after surviving an unprecedented failed execution attempt in Tennessee.

Speaking at a news conference following a court hearing, attorney Randy Spivey stated that Pike’s initial words upon awakening were to ask “Where am I?” and “Who are you?”Pike, 50, survived two full doses of lethal injection drugs during the September 30 execution attempt.

Capital punishment experts and her legal team emphasized that her survival is unparalleled in U.S. history, marking the first time a death row inmate has survived after executioners actually administered lethal injection chemicals.

On Wednesday, a state court judge ordered the State of Tennessee to preserve all physical evidence associated with the botched procedure.

Pike remains under critical care, restrained at her hands and feet in her hospital bed. Spivey noted that her legal representatives previously feared she was brain dead and anticipated her being removed from life support. To the surprise of medical personnel and her defense team, she began speaking again on Tuesday, though she retains only limited memory of the ordeal. Spivey recounted that Pike cooperated with the execution staff prior to the procedure, assisting them in locating a viable vein.

However, she subsequently awoke in intensive care with intubation tubes, severe swelling in both arms, a blood clot, pneumonia, and an inability to swallow. “We don’t know the toll all of this will take” on her mental and physical health, Spivey noted.

After two rounds of pentobarbital failed to kill her, prison staff halted the execution and transferred her to a medical facility, where doctors worked to stabilize her and flush the chemicals from her system. During Wednesday’s emergency court hearing, defense attorney Luke Ihnen detailed the ongoing communication hurdles facing her legal team, emphasizing that prison authorities continue to keep Pike heavily shackled to her bed despite medical requests to remove the restraints.

Tennessee Assistant Attorney General Will Ayers acknowledged the “unusual procedural position” of the case.

Chancellor I’Ashea Myles instructed the state to take rigorous precautions to preserve all medical apparatus, IV tubing, syringes, packaging, and psychological evaluations conducted before, during, and after the execution attempt.

When questioned by the court regarding whether the state plans to reschedule the execution, state counsel indicated that no decision has been reached. Tennessee Governor Bill Lee has since instituted a temporary moratorium on all state executions through the end of the year pending a comprehensive review of the incident, and the state’s prison director has submitted his resignation.

Pike was 18 years old when she and her then-boyfriend, Tadaryl Shipp, were arrested for the 1995 murder of 19-year-old classmate Colleen Slemmer at a job training program. Shipp, who was 17 at the time of the crime, was ineligible for the death penalty due to his age as a minor and remains incarcerated serving a life sentence.
