Tipper truck crushes motorcyclist to death in Lagos

A yet-to-be-identified motorcyclist has been crushed to death after a tipper truck loaded with sand reportedly rammed into a motorcycle at Ilasa Bus Stop, inward Mile 2, Lagos State.

The Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, LASEMA, Dr Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, disclosed this in a statement on Thursday.

According to Oke-Osanyintolu, the crash occurred at about 3:18 p.m. and involved the tipper truck, marked 19F 992FG, and a motorcycle.

He said the agency’s Eagle Response Team stationed at Cappa was mobilised to the scene after receiving a distress call and arrived within an estimated 15 minutes.

A preliminary assessment indicated that the tipper driver allegedly lost control of the vehicle before hitting the motorcycle from behind.

Oke-Osanyintolu said an adult male passenger on the motorcycle died from injuries sustained in the collision.

“Tragically, an adult male passenger on the motorcycle lost his life as a result of the collision,” he stated.

LASEMA responders, alongside paramedics from the agency’s Lagos Response Unit, officials of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) and the police, subsequently took control of the scene.

The deceased’s remains were recovered and respectfully placed in a body bag by LASEMA personnel before being handed over to family members who were present at the scene.

“The remains of the deceased were recovered, bagged with dignity by the agency’s responders, and handed over to family members present at the scene in accordance with best practices,” the PS added.

The damaged tipper truck and motorcycle were subsequently cleared from the road and moved to the Ilasamaja Police Station to aid further investigation into the crash.

Oke-Osanyintolu said the emergency operation was completed and traffic flow in the area returned to normal.

He expressed condolences to the deceased’s family and advised motorists, particularly operators of articulated vehicles, to drive cautiously and comply with traffic regulations.

“The Lagos State Government remains committed to the safety of lives and property and will continue to ensure rapid emergency response across the state,” he concluded.
