Soldier killed as ISWAP terrorists attack Borno military base

Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) terrorists have
killed a soldier during an attack on troops at the forward operating base (FOB)
in Logomani, Ngala LGA of Borno state.

 

A statement on Thursday by the Nigerian Army said the attack
occurred on July 7, adding that troops successfully repelled the assault but
two gun trucks and some combat enablers were damaged during the engagement.

“Although the insurgents briefly exploited a section of the
base’s defensive perimeter during the intense firefight, the troops rapidly
regrouped, mounted a determined counter-offensive and decisively expelled the
attackers, inflicting significant casualties and forcing the surviving
terrorists to flee with varying degrees of gunshot wounds,” the army said.

“Regrettably, one gallant soldier paid the supreme price,
while two gun trucks and some combat enablers sustained damage during the
engagement.”

“The situation at FOB Logomani remains firmly under the
control of Operation HADIN KAI troops, with reinforcements deployed,
exploitation operations ongoing and additional measures being implemented to
further strengthen the defensive resilience of the location.”

The incident comes a few days after troops of the 149
battalion repelled an ambush from suspected ISWAP members after two improvised
explosive device (IED) attacks targeted a military escort convoy in Mobbar LGA
of Borno state.

The first explosion, at Grema Kauri village, left E.P. Isah,
the battalion’s commanding officer, with minor injuries.

A second blast at Gambo Kurumuri village struck a convoy
escorting 16 empty humanitarian trucks before the insurgents launched an
ambush.

The troops overpowered the attackers, forcing them to flee.

One civilian truck driver was killed, another sustained
minor injuries, and one humanitarian truck was damaged.

The convoy later continued its journey under military
protection.
