Mutfwang orders security agencies to halt Hisba activities in Plateau

Plateau state governor, Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang, has directed security agencies to immediately halt the activities of a group reportedly operating as Hisba in parts of Jos North local government area, saying such activities are illegal and unauthorised.
The directive followed reports alleging that members of the group had intimidated, harassed and extorted residents, while imposing unauthorised rules and restrictions on citizens.
In a statement issued Monday by his Director of Press and Public Affairs, Dr Gyang Bere, Governor Mutfwang warned those involved to desist immediately or face arrest and prosecution in accordance with Nigerian law.
The governor added that Plateau state has one constitution, one legal system and one legitimate authority, adding that no individual or group could assume powers not conferred by law.
“No individual or group has the authority to appoint itself the government of Plateau state. The responsibility for enforcing the law belongs to duly constituted authorities acting within the law,” Mutfwang said.
He directed security agencies to identify and investigate persons involved in the reported activities and, where sufficient evidence of criminal conduct is established, arrest and prosecute them.
The governor also ordered intensified intelligence gathering and other lawful operations to establish the identity and activities of those involved and protect residents from intimidation, harassment, extortion and unlawful coercion.
Mutfwang clarified that the directive was not targeted at any religion, ethnic group or community, adding that the government remained committed to equal protection for all residents.
“The issue before the government is solely one of lawful conduct and legitimate authority,” he said.
