Sokoto set to establish mega School in each senatorial district – Official

As part of effort to ease congestion in Schools, Sokoto state government has concluded arrangement to establish 3 mega schools in the state.

This was disclosed by chairman Sokoto Universal Basic Education Board, Alhaji Umar Nagwari Tambuwal.

The chairman who stated this while speaking with newsmen in Sokoto said the Dr. Ahmed Aliyu’s led administration is poised to decongest schools down to international standard

Nagwari noted that some schools currently have 85 pupils  per 1 teacher, a situation he described as unacceptable and must be addressed

Speaking on success recorded by the current administration in the state, Nagwari said Sokoto state has been ranked among the best five states in the country in the just-concluded national assessment of basic education pupils conducted by the Federal Ministry of Education.

“The result came out yesterday. A Director from the Federal Ministry of Education called me that Sokoto is among the best five states in the Federation,” he said.

Tambuwal said the assessment covered 100 schools across the 23 LGAs, including primary, ECCD and junior secondary schools.

He listed other achievements to include prompt payment of N70,000 minimum wage to teachers, making Sokoto the only state currently doing so.

“Sokoto State remains the only state now paying national minimum wage of N70,000 to teachers.

” They are paid on or before 23rd of every month. Before, teachers would go 2 to 3 months without pay and get N18,000,” the SUBEB boss said.

The Chairman further said the 2025 education budget has about 19 per cent of the total state budget with 85 per cent cash backing, meaning funds appropriated are released instantly.

He said the state is up to date with UBEC counterpart funding and had accessed N3.7 billion for 2025.

Nagwaril said, “For 2026, the state has another N6 billion allocation, which with state counterpart will make N12 billion.”

Nagwari also said the board had renovated classrooms and built ICT centres, including a new satellite-based ICT Data Centre at the SUBEB Headquarters.

“The ICT centre is a data bank. I can sit here and see all schools in Silame. Whether teachers are coming to work or not, whether students are in class.

“It is mandatory for teachers to clock in. If they are absent we call the Education Secretary,” he said.

Speaking on the errant SUBEB contractors, Nagwari said he reported 10 contractors to EFCC and ICPC for breaching contractual agreement after collect huge amount of money from the SUBEB

According to the chairman, the ICPC / EFCC are currently prosecuting the errant contractors before the court of Law

He said the prosecution followed various petitions filed before the two commissions by SUBEB, with a view to retrieving hard-earned public funds given to the contractors to execute various projects in Sokoto State but which they failed to do in outright breach of the contractual agreements.

“We will not tolerate shoddy jobs, especially in rural schools. I am holding a lot of files that I refuse to pay. Go back to site and make corrections.

“When I am satisfied, then I pay. We have even taken people to ICPC and EFCC,” he said.

The SUBEB Chairman also commended governor Dr. Ahmed Aliyu for according top priority to education, insisting that the primary and basic education sector has never had it so good like under Aliyu.

 “This is not surprising as governor Ahmed Aliyu Sokoto’s 9-Point Smart Agenda focuses greater attention on revamping the education sector after it was almost left moribund by the immediate past administration,” he said.
