Okpebholo Sacks SUBEB Chair, Appoints Oyakhilome
Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has dismissed Mrs. Sonia Ebanehita Omonzane as Executive Chairman of the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) and appointed Hon. Ayewoh Ambrose Oyakhilome as her replacement.
The removal of Omonzane marks the fourth time the governor has fired a SUBEB chairman. In May 2025, Barrister Onomen Goodness Briggs was redeployed to the Board for Technical and Vocational Education (BTVE), while Omonzane was moved from BTVE to SUBEB. Earlier, Dr. Paddy Iyamu was removed as SUBEB chairman and appointed Commissioner for Education.
A statement issued Tuesday by the Secretary to the State Government, Barrister Umar Musa Ikhilor, confirmed Oyakhilome’s appointment. Until now, he served as Executive Chairman of the Edo State Rural Access Roads Agency (RARA).
Governor Okpebholo described Oyakhilome as a dedicated politician and administrator with a passion for effective leadership. “He is committed to promoting policies and initiatives that will enhance the quality of education and improve learning outcomes across the state,” the governor said.
Ikhilor added that Oyakhilome’s name would be forwarded to the Edo State House of Assembly for confirmation.
