Lagos:  Police sergeant knocked down, dies underneath fleeing Lexus car

A police sergeant, Johnson Okediji, has died after he was allegedly knocked down and dragged underneath a fleeing Lexus during a stop-and-search operation in Egbeda, Lagos.

The incident occurred on September 26, 2026, at about 2:20pm along Olugbede Street, Egbeda, when police officers on stop-and-search duty flagged down a Lexus ES 350 marked FKJ 223 KX.

The Commissioner of Police, Lagos state command, CP Tijani Fatai, stated this Monday while briefing journalists on the command’s operational activities for September.

Fatai said the vehicle, driven by 21-year-old Olumide Olusola, initially stopped after being flagged down by the officers.

The commissioner said trouble started when Sergeant Okediji approached the driver’s side of the vehicle, adding that the driver suddenly accelerated and knocked the officer down.

He said the policeman was dragged underneath the vehicle for several metres despite repeated efforts by other officers and passers-by to make the driver stop.

The fleeing driver was eventually chased and arrested by the police.

Fatai said the injured officer sustained multiple fractures and serious head injuries and was rushed to a nearby hospital before being referred to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, LASUTH.

He was, however, pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital.

The remains of the deceased have been deposited at the Mainland Hospital Mortuary for preservation and autopsy, while the Lexus was recovered and taken to the police station.

The death has cast a grim shadow over the command’s September operations, highlighting the risks faced by police personnel during routine law-enforcement duties.
