Lagos leads Nigeria’s voter register as INEC releases 2027 figures
Lagos State has the highest number of registered voters in Nigeria ahead of the 2027 general elections, according to figures released by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
The state tops the voter register with 7,488,633 registered voters, putting it ahead of Kano State, which has 6,000,570 registered voters.
The figures were disclosed by the INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, on Tuesday during the commission’s World Press Conference in Abuja.
The conference was held as part of INEC’s preparations for the 2027 general elections, with the commission providing an update on voter registration figures across the country.
Lagos maintains wide lead
Lagos’ 7.48 million registered voters give it a clear lead over Kano, the second-ranked state, with a difference of more than 1.48 million voters between the two states.
Kaduna State ranks third with 4,000,640 registered voters, while Katsina State occupies the fourth position with 3,876,051 voters.
Oyo State ranks fifth nationally with 3,588,111 registered voters, making it the fifth state with the highest number of registered voters ahead of the 2027 elections.
Delta State follows in sixth position with 3,525,988 registered voters, according to the figures presented by INEC.
Benue, Rivers, Ogun complete top 10
Benue State occupies the seventh position with 3,057,225 registered voters, while Rivers State ranks eighth with 3,000,734.
Ogun State is ninth with 3,037,981 registered voters, while Bauchi State completes the top 10 with 3,000,047 registered voters.
The figures place six states — Lagos, Kano, Kaduna, Katsina, Oyo and Delta — above the 3.5 million mark in registered voters, while the remaining four states in the top 10 have more than three million voters each.
The voter distribution is expected to be significant as political parties and candidates prepare for the 2027 general elections, with states having larger voter populations likely to remain major areas of political focus.
INEC’s disclosure comes as the commission continues its preparations for the elections and works towards ensuring that eligible Nigerians are captured in the electoral process.
