Lagos: 1 dead as tipper crushes motorcycle, passenger at Ilasa

One person was killed on Wednesday after a sand-laden tipper truck crashed into a motorcycle at Ilasa bus stop, inward Mile 2, Lagos.

The fatal accident occurred at about 3:18pm, prompting a swift response from the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA).

According to the agency, its Eagle Response Team stationed at Cappa was immediately mobilised following the distress call and arrived at the scene about 15 minutes later.

Preliminary findings indicated that the crash involved a tipper truck with registration number 19F 992FG and a motorcycle.

LASEMA said the accident was caused by reckless driving, alleging that the tipper driver lost control of the vehicle before colliding with the motorcycle from behind.

A male passenger on the motorcycle died from injuries sustained in the crash.

Emergency responders comprising LASEMA personnel, Lagos Response Unit (LRU) paramedics, officials of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) and officers of the Nigeria Police Force jointly managed the incident.

The deceased’s remains were recovered by LASEMA responders and handled with dignity before being handed over to family members present at the scene.

To prevent further obstruction and ease traffic congestion, the affected tipper truck and motorcycle were removed from the carriageway and taken to the Ilasamaja Police Station for further investigation.

LASEMA said its operation was subsequently concluded after normal traffic flow was restored, with the emergency responders returning to base.

The Permanent Secretary of LASEMA, Dr Olufemi Damilola Oke-Osanyintolu, commiserated with the family of the deceased and urged motorists to exercise caution while using Lagos roads.

He particularly appealed to drivers of articulated vehicles to obey traffic regulations, avoid reckless driving and prioritise the safety of other road users.

Oke-Osanyintolu reiterated the Lagos state government’s commitment to protecting lives and property, assuring residents that emergency response operations would continue to be strengthened across the state.
