KACRAN urges NEDC, North-east Governors to partner on job creation, agriculture

Kulen Allah Cattle Rearers Association of Nigeria (KACRAN) has urged the North-East Development Commission (NEDC) to partner with the six North-East governors on massive job creation, agricultural development and the exploration of natural resources across the region.

The association, in a statement signed by its National President, Hon. Khalil Mohd Bello, said the proposed partnership would help strengthen the region’s economy, create opportunities for youths and consolidate peace and development efforts in the North-East.

KACRAN commended NEDC for what it described as significant interventions in the region, particularly in the reconstruction of schools, houses and public infrastructure destroyed by insurgency.

The association, which said it had benefited from NEDC’s livestock-related programmes, including the provision of potable water for pastoral communities, animal feeds and palliatives for internally displaced persons, urged the Commission to expand its focus from reconstruction to long-term economic development.

According to KACRAN, massive job creation should be a major priority of the proposed partnership, noting that millions of people, including graduates of universities and other tertiary institutions, are in need of employment opportunities in the region.

It said providing jobs and sustainable livelihoods would help reduce vulnerability to recruitment into criminal activities while enabling residents to contribute meaningfully to rebuilding the region.

On agriculture, KACRAN called for greater investment in arable farming, livestock and fisheries, saying the move would strengthen food security, increase agricultural exports and reduce dependence on imported food products.

The association proposed that NEDC provide technical expertise and financial support for the programme, while the state governments would provide land and security to facilitate large-scale agricultural and livestock projects.

KACRAN also urged NEDC and the North-East governors to intensify the exploration and processing of the region’s natural resources, saying the initiative could generate employment, stimulate industrial development and strengthen Nigeria’s economic base.

The association said the North-East was endowed with substantial natural resources and human capital which, if properly harnessed, could contribute significantly to national development.

It further urged NEDC to serve as a model for other regional development commissions, particularly as development commissions have been established in other geopolitical zones.

KACRAN said such collaboration could support broader regional economic development and contribute to addressing insecurity through the creation of sustainable livelihoods.

The association also commended NEDC for its reported plan to procure 10,000 buses, including luxury buses, 18-seater buses, taxis and tricycles, to provide affordable transportation services across the North-East.

It praised the NEDC management, led by its Managing Director, Alhaji Mohammed Goni Alkali, as well as the Director of Administration and Finance, Dr Garba Iliya, and other directors and staff for their contributions to the development of the region.
