Jigawa: New Emir of Gumel emerges

The Jigawa state Governor, Umar Namadi, has approved the appointment of Lawan Muhammad-Sani as the 17th Emir of Gumel, following the death of his father, the late Emir Ahmed Muhammad-Sani.

The appointment was announced by the Jigawa state government on Sunday in a formal statement signed by the Secretary to the State Government, Bala Ibrahim. Blueprint reports

Lawan Muhammad-Sani, who succeeds his father on the historic Gumel throne, was selected after consultations and recommendations by the traditional institutions responsible for the process.

The development comes just three days after the death of the former emir, who passed away on Thursday, September 3, 2026, after an exceptionally long 46-year reign.

Lawan succeeds father after 46 years on throne

The new Emir of Gumel takes over from his late father, Ahmed Muhammad-Sani, whose reign spanned more than four decades and placed him among the longest-serving traditional rulers in Jigawa State.

The late emir ascended the Gumel throne in 1980 and remained on it until his death earlier this month, providing continuity in the traditional administration of the emirate over several decades.

His death had created a vacancy in one of the prominent traditional institutions in Jigawa State, with attention immediately turning to the succession process and the candidate who would emerge as his replacement.

The emergence of Lawan means the Gumel Emirate will now be headed by a member of the late emir’s immediate family, preserving the traditional line of succession while also bringing to the throne a monarch with professional experience outside the traditional institution.

Kingmakers, Council of Chiefs backed appointment

According to the state government, Governor Namadi approved the appointment after receiving recommendations from the Gumel Emirate Council kingmakers, chaired by the Wazirin Gumel, Adamu Nasoro.

The recommendations were subsequently considered alongside those of the Jigawa State Council of Chiefs, which comprises the Emirs of Hadejia, Kazaure, Ringim and Dutse.

The involvement of the emirate kingmakers and the wider Council of Chiefs formed part of the process through which the state government arrived at the appointment.

The government said the governor appreciated the guidance provided by the traditional institutions during the selection exercise and commended them for ensuring that the process was concluded following the death of the former emir.

The appointment therefore brings to an end the brief period of uncertainty over the occupant of the Gumel throne and formally establishes Lawan Muhammad-Sani as the emirate’s 17th emir.

New emir brings technology experience to throne

Before his elevation to the traditional institution, Lawan Muhammad-Sani had established a career in Nigeria’s information technology sector.

He previously held the traditional title of Chiroman Gumel and also served as Director of Cyber Security at the National Information Technology Development Agency, NITDA.

His professional background in cyber security distinguishes him from the conventional profile often associated with traditional rulers and gives the new emir experience in a rapidly evolving area of national development.

His career at NITDA placed him within the country’s information technology ecosystem, where cyber security has become increasingly important to the protection of digital infrastructure, government systems and electronic services.

His transition from a senior position in the technology sector to the traditional institution also means that the Gumel Emirate will now be led by a monarch with experience spanning both traditional administration and the modern technology environment.

Succession follows death of former emir

The appointment was necessitated by the death of Emir Ahmed Muhammad-Sani, who died on September 3 after 46 years on the throne.

His reign covered a significant period in the history of Gumel and Jigawa, during which the traditional institution witnessed changes in governance, society and the economy.

The longevity of his reign also gave him a unique position within the traditional leadership structure of the state, with successive generations growing up under his leadership.

The transition to a new monarch has consequently attracted attention not only because of the prominence of the Gumel Emirate but also because the successor is the late emir’s son.

Lawan’s appointment is expected to provide continuity in the traditional institution while beginning a new chapter under a monarch whose background combines inherited traditional responsibilities with professional experience.

Governor wishes new monarch successful reign

Governor Namadi congratulated Lawan Muhammad-Sani on his appointment and expressed his best wishes for his tenure as the 17th Emir of Gumel.

The governor also commended the kingmakers and members of the State Council of Chiefs for their role in the selection process.

Namadi wished the new emir a peaceful, successful and impactful reign, with a focus on service to the people of the Gumel Emirate, Jigawa State and the country.

The governor’s message underscores the importance attached by the state government to the traditional institution and its role in maintaining stability, community leadership and social cohesion.

Traditional rulers continue to occupy an important position in many Nigerian communities, particularly in matters involving community mobilisation, cultural preservation, dispute resolution and engagement with government.

The new emir will therefore assume the throne at a time when traditional institutions remain important channels of communication between government and communities across the country.

A new chapter for Gumel Emirate

With the appointment of Lawan Muhammad-Sani, the Gumel Emirate now begins a new chapter following the end of the 46-year reign of his father.

The new monarch’s previous experience as Chiroman Gumel, coupled with his professional career as a cyber security director at NITDA, is expected to shape his approach to the responsibilities associated with the throne.
