El-Rufai Laments on Silence of Allies Amid Legal, Political Challenges

Former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai has spoken out about the quiet stance of some friends, former colleagues and family members during his ongoing legal and political difficulties, noting that he once stood by them at significant personal cost.

In a statement titled “My Relationships and the Aftermath,” dated September 23, 2026, El-Rufai said his actions throughout life had always been guided by his Islamic faith, Arewa upbringing, personal values and conscience.

He stressed that the support he offered others was never motivated by expectations of praise, gratitude or reciprocity. Those decisions, he said, were freely made and remain his responsibility alone.

“Some people have mentioned that they are worried about the quiet behaviour of some colleagues, friends and family members whom I used to support or have close ties with publicly,” El-Rufai noted.

“Throughout my life, I’ve tried to do my best for my co-workers and friends, my family, and people everywhere… Over the years, I have supported people and stood up for causes I believed in, even when things were tough and it cost me a lot personally.“I did it not because I expected praise, thanks or anything in return, but because I thought it was the right thing to do.”

He added that those he once helped are now free to choose their own paths. Some may speak out, others may stay silent, and a few may even deny past relationships or attempt to rewrite history.

El-Rufai said the recent tough months had prompted him to quietly reassess certain relationships and the expectations that come with them.
