CUPP chair condemns attack on Peter Obi

Acting Chairman of the Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP), and the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), High Chief Peter Ameh, has flayed the attack on the presidential candidate of the party, Mr Peter Obi in Benue state.

In a statement on Tuesday Ameh said, “the attack on Mr. Peter Obi’s convoy, in Benue state today stands condemned. It is ridiculous and unacceptable that such action has been taken against the opposition.

“I strongly condemn the roadblock and intimidation reportedly carried out by individuals in Benue, allegedly with the backing of those in power. No citizen should be subjected to harassment, threats, or unnecessary obstruction on a public road. Our roads belong to the people, and political influence must never be used to create fear, inconvenience, or a sense of lawlessness.

“These actions violate the fundamental rights guaranteed under the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended). Section 41(1) provides that “Every citizen of Nigeria is entitled to move freely throughout Nigeria and to reside in any part thereof…” Section 40 further guarantees that “Every person shall be entitled to assemble freely and associate with other persons, and in particular he may form or belong to any political party, trade union or any other association for the protection of his interests.”

“If these actions were indeed sponsored or encouraged by anyone connected to the state government, then that is deeply troubling and must be thoroughly investigated. Public office is a responsibility, not a licence to intimidate citizens or empower thugs.

“The Benue state government must openly condemn this incident and ensure that Mr. Peter Obi’s visit to Benue proceeds without any distractions or further interference.

“We must continue to speak up for peace, accountability, and the rule of law. Benue deserves leadership that protects its people and respect our constitutional rights, not actions that harass, intimidate, or humiliate our citizens.

“I call on the relevant authorities to investigate this incident transparently and ensure that those responsible are held accountable, regardless of their APC connections,” the CUPP leader said.
