CBN reiterates call to handle Naira notes with care

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) in Kano Monday reiterated the call on Nigerians to handle the currency with care and dignity to save expenses encountered in minting it.

The call was made by the Director of Currency Operations and Branch Management Department, Dr. Adetona Adedeji, who was represented at a road show in Kano by Ibrahim Yahaya, the Deputy Director, Planning and Development Division.

“I am here representing the Director of the Department of Currency and Operations as well as the entire management of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to bring a key message to the people about proper handling of the Naira.

“Naira is the symbol of our sovereignty, it is our national pride and we need to handle naira very carefully and effectively.

“We need to handle naira carefully because the Naira is being replaced when it is dirty, when it is soiled or even it is spoiled and the CBN, and by extension the Federal Government is spending a lot of money to replace any soiled or mutilated currency.

“That is why we are engaging the general public to tell them the importance of handling Naira carefully. We believe that by handling Naira carefully we are extending the lifespan of the naira and by extension saving a lot of money,” he stated.

The CBN official who visited Galalima Market, Sabon Gari Market, Abbatuer as well as Yankaba Market Tarauni Market and Yan Lemo also distributed money purses to the traders at the markets while demonstrating how the currency is expected to be kept and well preserved.

Also speaking to newsmen at the road show, the chairman of the Galadima Market Association, Mustapha Shuaibu Sulaiman, promised to extend the message of the CBN to the members.

However, he called the CBN to stop commercial banks across the country from issuing dilapidated currency to the public.
