Canadian government warns citizens against buying alc0hol in Nigeria after 48 d+aths in Ondo

The Canadian government has warned its citizens in Nigeria to exercise caution when consuming alc0hol following reports of d+aths and hospitalisations linked to suspected meth@nol-contaminated drinks in Ondo State.

In a safety notice issued on Tuesday, Canadian officials advised citizens to buy alc0hol only from reputable establishments and seek medical attention if they begin to feel s!ck after consuming alc0hol.

The notice did not state the number of c@sualties. However, Nigerian health officials said last week that 48 people had d+ed while about 180 others were receiving treatment in Ondo State after consuming a locally brewed alc0holic beverage suspected to contain meth@nol.

Meth@nol is a highly t+xic substance that can cause multipl£ organ f@ilure, breathing difficulties, bl!ndness and brain d@mage.

A survivor, 32-year-old Sola Adebayo, told TVC News from his hospital bed that he consumed about two shots of the drink before losing his sight the following day.

Ondo State Commissioner for Health, Banji Ajaka, said the effects could occur rapidly, with the substance potentially causing the kidneys to f@il, affecting the eyes and causing brain d@mage after consumption.

Police said 15 people had been arr+sted in connection with the suspected t+xic drink, while locals reportedly suspected that a popular herbal alcoholic drink known as “Monkey Tail” was mixed with meth@nol.

The report noted that homemade alc0hol is common in some rural parts of Nigeria, where it is cheaper and less regulated. NAFDAC has also enforced a nationwide ban on alcohol sold in sachets and small plastic containers.
