A coalition of six opposition parties has proposed the
establishment of a ‘government of national competence’ that would operate for a
single four-year transition term ahead of the 2027 general election.

The proposal was made on Monday at a summit of opposition
political parties organised by G100 in Abuja.

Political parties represented at the summit were the African
Democratic Congress (ADC), Allied Peoples Movement (APM), Nigeria Democratic
Congress (NDC), Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Peoples Redemption Party (PRP)
and Social Democratic Party (SDP).

Salihu Lukman, former vice-chairman (north-west) of the All
Progressives Congress (APC), who presented the proposal at the summit, said the
proposed government would be anchored on four principles: competence,
integrity, national inclusion and fair representation.

The coalition also proposed an enforceable transition
charter to ensure that participating parties abide by the agreement.

Under the proposed framework, the coalition would establish
a central leadership committee, a publicity and communication committee and a
legal committee.

The coalition would also create working groups on democratic
renewal, the single-term transition charter, national reforms, opposition unity
and the selection of a common presidential candidate.

Lukman said the initiative is not seeking the dissolution of
any political party or asking any candidate to withdraw from the 2027 race.

He said the immediate objective is to establish a framework
for cooperation before discussions on leadership and candidates.

According to Lukman, G100 was facilitating the process
without endorsing any political party or candidate.

He said the goal was to provide Nigerians with a credible
alternative government in the 2027 elections.
