Abuja women engineers celebrate service, honour Abdulmalik, others

The Association of Professional Women Engineers of Nigeria (APWEN) Abuja chapter penultimate week awarded industrious personnel of the association.

It also elected Engr. Amina Abdulmalik as its chapter chairman among other new executives with a call to deepen mentorship, visibility, and leadership for women in engineering.

The development followed the 2026 APWEN Abuja Engineering Week with the theme: ‘Engineering Beyond Boundaries: Empowering Women, Inspiring Innovation and Transforming Communities’, which began with a community outreach in Kugbo village where the body gifted out about 100 medicated eye glasses to residents as well as rendering free checkups.

Giving her welcome address in Abuja, the new chapter chairman, Engr. Amina Abdulmalik, MNSE, described the event as “a journey, a celebration of service, and the beginning of another chapter of leadership. Adding that, the initiative wasn’t about titles, but about responsibility to the profession and to the next generation.”

According to the woman engineer, “The three words: ‘Encourage, Enhance, Excel’, are more than “our motto. They are a responsibility. We must encourage the young girl who dreams of becoming an engineer.

“We must enhance the capacity, confidence and opportunities of women already in the profession. And we must excel—not merely for ourselves, but so that those coming behind us can see what is possible.”

Abdulmalik, who was given awards among others at the event, noted that the recognition segment was designed to publicly recognise contributions that are often done quietly, saying: “Your recognition tonight is not simply about an honour or a plaque. It is a reminder that impact matters, service matters, integrity matters, and the footprints we leave behind matter.”

She urged the incoming executives to lead with “humility, courage, inclusiveness and vision,” adding that leadership should create opportunities for others to rise.

Minister of Works, Sen. Engr. Nweze David Umahi, Permanent Secretary Ministry of Works, Engr. Olufunso Adebiyi and High Chief Pharm Henry Okolo, amongst others received Engineering Inclusion and Advocacy awards at the occasion
