“Spending 3 to 4 hours going to work every day” — TikToker lists 10 ‘questionable habits’ Nigerians have normalised

A TikTok user has listed 10 things she claims Nigerians have become used to despite believing they should not be considered normal.

In a video, the user questioned the culture of having multiple jobs, working from morning till night while still struggling to afford basic needs, and parents expecting their children to become financially independent immediately after leaving school.

She also mentioned spending two to four hours commuting to work every day, being afraid to take vacations because of concerns about what could go wrong in their absence, and young people feeling guilty for wanting more than just survival.

The TikTok user also pointed to the belief that knowing someone is necessary to access certain opportunities, as well as people asking how much someone earns before asking whether they actually enjoy their work.

According to the user, another issue is graduates being told to immediately learn a skill because what they studied in university is considered insufficient for employment.

The final point was having a degree but still needing additional skills, experience, certificates and connections just to become employable.

The user said Nigerians have become so accustomed to these realities that many no longer question them, adding that “it’s not normal.”
