A prominent businessman in Zamfara state, Alhaji Bello Gwamnati, has been shot dead by suspected bandits on Wednesday evening along the Birnin Magaji – Kaura Namoda road in Zamfara state.
According to family sources, the incident occurred while Alhaji Bello was returning from Birnin Magaji market.
The armed bandits reportedly opened fire on his vehicle, killing him on the spot and abducting several other occupants of the car.
Blueprint reports that Gwamnati was a well-known figure in Kaura Namoda town, where he was responsible for the upkeep of more than 50 people under his care.
Residents described him as a generous philanthropist and a pillar of the local business community whose death has thrown the town into mourning.
His funeral prayer (Jana’iza) is scheduled to hold today.
His death adds to the growing insecurity on rural highways in Zamfara state, where attacks on traders and travelers have continued despite ongoing military operations.
As of the time of filing this report, police authorities are yet to issue an official statement on the attack and the number of persons abducted.
