2027 elections: SDP affirms ex-IGP Adamu as governorship candidate

The Social Democratic Party (SDP) has declared former Inspector-General of Police, IGP Mohammed Abubakar Adamu, as its governorship candidate for Nasarawa state.

This followed the replacement of primary conducted on Saturday September 5, 2026 at Ta’al conference Hotel, Lafia.

Announcing the result, Chairman of the SDP electoral committee for Nasarawa state, Barr. Joseph Achille, said the exercise was conducted across all 13 Local Government Areas (LGAs) of the state.

He said the results were also collated at the LGAs.

Achille, said a total of 28,637 delegates were present and cast their votes.

He said the committee “duly collated all the votes emanating from the various wards” and that the exercise was conducted “peacefully and lawfully.”

“Having scored the total votes peacefully and lawfully, it gives me singular privilege, by the powers conferred on me by the National Executive Committee and the National Working Committee, to declare the result that, Mohammed Abubakar Adamu scored the highest lawful valid votes,” Achille said.

“Subsequently, he is declared, returned, and elected as the candidate and flag-bearer of the Social Democratic Party for Nasarawa State,” he added.

Speaking, SDP National chairman Prof Sadiq Umar Abubakar, described the event as “historic” for both the party and the state.

He said Nasarawa deserves leadership with composure and competence, above all with sound character, believing that ex-IGP Adamu will bring development, roads, healthcare, access to potable water, youth/women empowerment and engagement, affordable and accessible education, as well as jobs for the teeming youths in the state.

“That is why I stand before you to present IGP Mohammed Abubakar Adamu, rtd who is the son of the soil, who has already proven himself in service to Nigeria. A man whose record speaks volumes louder than any campaign poster”

“He has carried our name with honour and pride to the highest levels of national service. As Inspector General of Police, he was one of the finest officers of our time who led with discipline, integrity, humility and kept millions of Nigerians, Africans, and the world community safe when he served as IGP,” he said.

In his acceptance speech, the former IGP promised to work tirelessly to “change the bad governance that is taking place” in the state.

He said his administration, if elected, would prioritise basic infrastructure and social services across the state.

“We will not neglect social amenities that are required. We have gone round the state, we have seen all the roads that are in the hinterlands are neglected. We will make sure that we take care of those,” he stated.

“We’ll provide healthcare that is needed not only in the urban cities, but also in the rural areas.”

He said agriculture and solid minerals would be central to his development plan.

Adamu pledged a campaign focused on specific commitments.

He said, “During the campaign, we are going to be specific in all that we will do, and telling our people what we are going to do word-by-word, local government-by-local government.”
