A total of 17,620 teachers in Kebbi state are now on the N75, 000 minimum wage payroll along with other workers in the state civil service.

This came into effect after Governor Nasir Idris approved the implementation of the white paper on the report of the committee set up to verify the present condition of teachers in the state.

The committee ascertained the actual number of qualified and unqualified teachers, their pay package and entire staff strength.

At a news briefing in Birnin Kebbi, Wednesday, the state chairman of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Abubakar Zaki, expressed appreciation to Comrade Idris for fulfilling his promises to improve the working condition of teachers throughout Kebbi.

“As a professional teacher and veteran labour leader, Governor Idris has demonstrated zeal and compassion in uplifting the welfare of teachers, the teaching profession and the education sector.

“The NUT acknowledges the rehabilitation of 22,650 schools and the construction of 200 new ones, aimed at providing conducive learning environment to teachers, pupils and students.

“After the verification exercise ordered by the governor and consequent approval of N75,000 minimum wage in September, teachers in Kebbi will start enjoying the new benchmark salary structure beginning from this month of October.

“Before now, the governor had reviewed the retirement age of teachers from 60 – 65 years of age and from 35 – 40 years in service, which he had earlier clamoured for nationwide during his leadership as the National President of the NUT,” Zaki said.
