The Yobe State chapter of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has raised concerns over the alleged failure of the Yobe State Independent Electoral Commission (YSIEC) to release guidelines and a timetable for the 2026 local government elections.

In a letter addressed to YSIEC and signed on Wednesday by the state chairman, Umar Kalli Alhaji, the party expressed dissatisfaction with what it described as inadequate communication on activities that directly affect its participation in the polls.

According to the ADC, failure to provide the election guidelines and other key documents undermines the party’s constitutional rights.

The party asked the commission to provide evidence showing when, how and through what official means the information was sent to it.

The patty cautioned that it would explore “all legal options” if it was determined that its participation in the process had been hampered, citing Sections 7, 40 and 197 of the 1999 Constitution, as amended, the Third Schedule and other relevant electoral provisions.

“Equal access to electoral information is critical for lawful political engagement, which is why we view this issue as serious,” part of the letter stated.

It gave YSIEC an ultimatum to respond promptly and take remedial steps, warning that failure to do so would compel it to seek legal redress and take its complaints to the media and other public platforms.

The correspondence was also copied to the state Attorney-General, the Governor’s political adviser, the Commissioners of Police and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), as well as the Director of the Department of State Services (DSS).

As of press time, YSIEC had not responded to the allegations.
