Solar installation: How to apply for federal government’s training window

The Federal Government has opened applications for a free three-week Solar Photovoltaic Installation Training programme for professionals, technicians, graduates and young Nigerians interested in building careers in renewable energy.

The programme is designed to equip participants with practical and technical skills in solar photovoltaic installation while providing them with an opportunity to obtain professional certification.

The initiative is being implemented in collaboration with Siemens Energy and the German development agency, GIZ, under the Siemens Energy Education and Development project, known as SEED.

Who can apply for the training?

The organisers said the programme is open to a wide range of applicants, including professionals, technicians, recent graduates, young people and Nigerians seeking to develop careers in the renewable energy sector.

Recent graduates with National Diploma, Higher National Diploma or undergraduate qualifications are encouraged to apply.

Young professionals working in related fields can also submit their applications, while Nigerians with practical experience in technical areas are eligible to participate.

Importantly, the organisers said applicants do not necessarily need to have formal educational qualifications or previous practical experience to apply.

This means people interested in acquiring skills in solar photovoltaic installation but without a formal technical background can also express their interest.

However, all successful applicants must be able to attend the training physically for the entire three-week period.

What will the training involve?

According to a notice issued by FGN Power Company, the training will combine classroom-based lessons with practical sessions designed to give participants hands-on knowledge of solar photovoltaic installation.

Participants will also take part in technical site visits, which are expected to expose them to practical applications of the skills covered during the programme.

The training will conclude with competency assessments to determine participants’ understanding and ability to apply the technical knowledge acquired.

Successful participants will receive certification from the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN) after completing the programme.

Where will the training take place?

The training will be held at centres in Lagos and Abeokuta, Ogun State.

Each training stream will last for three weeks, with participants required to attend the programme onsite.

The organisers have therefore advised prospective applicants to consider their availability and preferred training location before submitting their applications.

The programme is also supported by the Nigerian Energy Support Programme, a technical assistance initiative co-funded by the European Union and the German Government and implemented by GIZ.

How to apply

Interested applicants are required to complete an online Expression of Interest form on or before 4pm on Friday, September 18, 2026.

Applicants will be required to provide basic personal information, including their full names, gender, phone numbers and email addresses.

They must also indicate their preferred training location and confirm that they will be available to participate in the three-week onsite training scheduled to commence in September.

The application form also requires information about applicants’ educational and professional backgrounds.

Prospective participants are expected to provide details of their highest qualification, employment status, work experience and sector of employment.

Applicants with formal educational qualifications must upload their latest CVs and degree certificates or other relevant certificates as part of the application process.

How much does the training cost?

The organisers said the training and certification will be provided at no cost to successful participants.

Meals will also be provided to participants on training days.

However, applicants are expected to make their own arrangements for accommodation and transportation throughout the training period.

Prospective applicants should therefore consider these personal costs, particularly if they are travelling from outside Lagos or Ogun State.

The Federal Government and its partners said the programme is aimed at strengthening technical skills and expanding opportunities in Nigeria’s renewable energy sector by giving participants access to practical solar installation training and professional certification.
