SDP Halts Campaign for One Week to Mourn NAF Crash Victims
The Adebayo-Bugaje Presidential Campaign of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) has suspended all campaign activities for one week in honour of victims of the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) aircraft crash in Igbokoda, Ondo State.
The ATR-42 aircraft went down on Monday in the coastal riverine area, claiming 25 lives.
Announcing the suspension in Abuja, the Head of Media and Communications Directorate, Comrade Mark Adebayo, said the decision was taken as a mark of respect for the fallen personnel and solidarity with the Armed Forces of Nigeria.
The campaign described the incident as a “monumental national tragedy,” stressing that politics must give way to mourning and reflection.
SDP presidential candidate Prince Adewole Adebayo and his running mate, Prof. Usman Bugaje, have condoled with the Chief of Air Staff, the Nigerian Air Force leadership, and families of the victims.
“We stand shoulder-to-shoulder with the Nigerian Air Force and the families left behind,” they said, praying for fortitude and comfort for the bereaved.During the mourning period, all rallies, town hall meetings, stakeholder engagements, and media appearances will be suspended.
The campaign also urged government to adopt a comprehensive insurance policy for military and security personnel, while calling for stricter maintenance of aircraft and equipment to prevent avoidable tragedies.
“The sacrifices of our gallant officers must be matched with concrete welfare and safety measures,” the statement added.
