Nigeria’s Crude Oil Production Hits Six-year High, Surpasses OPEC Quota

• Nigeria’s crude oil production rose to 1.56 million barrels per day (bpd) in June, its highest level in six years.

• The output exceeded the country’s 1.5 million bpd OPEC+ production quota and lifted total oil production, including condensates, to 1.735 million bpd.

• Authorities say improved security, reduced pipeline disruptions and stable operations drove the increase as Nigeria targets 2 million bpd by 2027.

Nigeria’s crude oil production climbed to a six-year high in June 2026, exceeding its production quota set by the Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC+) amid renewed uncertainty in the global energy market.

Latest figures released by the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) showed that the country produced an average of 1.56 million barrels of crude oil per day (bpd) in June, representing about 104 per cent of its OPEC+ quota of 1.5 million bpd. It is Nigeria’s highest crude oil output since April 2020.

The commission attributed the improved performance to sustained operational stability across oil-producing assets, improved crude evacuation and the absence of major pipeline outages and sabotage during the period under review.

Including condensates, Nigeria’s total oil production increased to 1.735 million bpd, marking the fourth consecutive month of production growth. Peak combined crude oil and condensate production also reached 1.89 million bpd during the month.

The latest production increase comes as tensions in the Middle East continue to raise concerns over possible disruptions to global oil supply, particularly through the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s busiest energy shipping routes.

Industry analysts believe Nigeria could benefit from the prevailing market conditions as buyers seek alternative sources of crude oil in response to geopolitical uncertainties.

The recent improvement has also been linked to intensified efforts by the Federal Government, security agencies and industry operators to curb crude oil theft, pipeline vandalism and illegal refining activities in the Niger Delta, challenges that had previously constrained production.

Authorities are now targeting an immediate increase of an additional 100,000 barrels per day to take advantage of potential supply gaps in the international market.

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) has also reiterated its commitment to raising the country’s crude oil production to two million barrels per day by 2027.

The latest figures are expected to boost confidence in Nigeria’s upstream petroleum sector while strengthening the country’s position as a key supplier in the global oil market.
