Edo community hands man to operatives over alleged same-sex act

Residents of Upper Ekenwan Community in Egor local government area of Edo state have apprehended and handed over a man, identified as Destiny Osayomore, to the police over allegations of same-sex conduct and links to a confraternity group.

Destiny was reportedly apprehended at his residence on Faith Lane, off Ekenwan Road, following a private gathering he was said to have hosted for friends and acquaintances.

 A spokesman for the community, Ogiso Uzi, said the gathering allegedly took a different turn after one of the guests raised an alarm over alleged same-sex conduct involving Osayomore.

 Uzi further alleged that the guest questioned some of Destiny’s associates and raised concerns over his alleged links to a confraternity group, against the backdrop of ongoing campaigns by the state government and security agencies against cultism and other forms of criminality.

 According to the community spokesman, the alarm attracted other residents who reportedly went to the house and apprehended Destiny before taking him before community leaders.

 “He was subsequently handed over to security operatives for investigation. The circumstances surrounding the allegations would have to be established by the appropriate authorities,” Ogiso said.

The incident reportedly generated tension in the area, while Destiny was said to have expressed concern about his safety and denied the allegations against him.

 An eyewitness, who spoke on condition of anonymity, also alleged that the suspect was physically assaulted and subjected to humiliating treatment before being handed over to the security operatives.

 The witness further claimed that the allegation of cult membership was largely based on the company Destiny allegedly kept and the people with whom he associated, rather than any specific evidence presented against him.

 The Edo State Police Command spokesman, ASP Eno Ikoedem, confirmed the incident, stating: “The matter is still under investigation.”
