The Director-General of the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC), Mr Charles Ebuebu, has called on stakeholders in Nigeria’s creative economy to strengthen intellectual property (IP) protection and monetisation structures to fully realise the commercial potential of Nigerian content.
Addressing industry leaders at the NEMCEA 2026 conference in Ikeja, Mr Ebuebu stressed that although Nigerian stories have immense cultural and commercial value, this potential remains untapped without effective legal frameworks, investment, and access to international markets.
“Nigerian content has enormous cultural and commercial potential, but that potential cannot be fully realised without effective intellectual property protection, stronger monetisation structures, investment, professional risk management, and access to international markets,” the NBC Director-General stated.
Mr Ebuebu outlined a clear ambition for the nation’s media industry: to tell compelling stories, convert them into sustainable economic value, and export them with confidence to the world.
He reaffirmed the NBC’s commitment to fostering a regulatory environment that encourages innovation and investment, and commended NEMCEA for providing a crucial platform to address these challenges and to build partnerships across the digital creator and traditional media landscapes.
Blueprint reports that NEMCEA 2026 is the fifth edition of the event organised by the Electronic Media Content Owners Association of Nigeria (EMCOAN).
The theme was “The Creator’s Economy- elevate your craft, secure your future”
In his remarks, EMCOAN President Mr. Adeniji Omirin, said that the association was “excited about the important conversations around the Digital Switchover, Audience Measurement, FreeTV, and the emerging opportunities for insurance and risk management within the creative industry. These are not merely conversations about the future; they are conversations about the opportunities before us today.”
