Lagos government seals church, hotels and businesses over environmental violations

The Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency has sealed 12 establishments, including a church, hotels, lounges and other businesses, over alleged persistent violations of environmental regulations.

LASEPA disclosed the enforcement action in a statement on Wednesday, saying the affected establishments were sealed on Tuesday, September 22, across several parts of Lagos State. According to the agency, the operation covered Ogba, Idimu-Ikota, Ejigbo, LASU-Iba Road, Igando and Agodo-Egbe.

LASEPA said the establishments had continued to violate environmental regulations despite receiving repeated warnings, abatement notices and opportunities to comply with its directives. The agency said the enforcement exercise was carried out in line with the Lagos State Government’s efforts to ensure compliance with environmental laws, protect public health and promote a cleaner and safer environment.

Among the establishments sealed was Thrillz Lounge on Odusanmi Street, Ogba, which LASEPA accused of noise pollution and failing to comply with its directives. Feixiang Plastic, located along LASU-Ojo Road at Oko Filling Bus Stop, was also sealed for alleged non-compliance.

Marvel Hotel & Suites at Chrisbee Crescent, BRT Bus Stop, Igando, was shut over alleged noise pollution and non-compliance, while Keviz Hotel & Suites on Councilor Ajayi Street, Obadore Bus Stop, LASU-Iba Road, was sealed for alleged obstruction of duty and failure to comply with the agency’s directives. Other affected establishments included DSN Hotel & Suites on Benson Onyeacholen Street, LASU-Igando Road, and Rudaj Vegetable Oil on Tanimowo Street, Igando Road, both of which LASEPA said were sealed for non-compliance.

Celestial Church of Christ, Aduragbemi Parish, on Adetola Buhari Street, Okerube Bus Stop, Ikotun, was also sealed over alleged noise pollution and non-compliance with environmental directives. LASEPA further sealed Limas on Aro-Oloye Street, off Abaranje Road, Abaranje, Ikotun, and Nico Hotel & Suites at Ayawo Close, NEPA Bus Stop, Egbe-Isolo Road, Ejigbo, for alleged non-compliance.

Kobo Night Club on Abanishe Street, off Hostel Road, Agodo-Egbe, was shut over alleged noise pollution and non-compliance. Master Furniture on Coleman Street, Pao Bus Stop, Idimu-Ikota Road, and Nikky’s Executive Bar & Lounge on Governor’s Road, Ikotun, were also sealed for alleged failure to comply with the agency’s directives.

Speaking on the operation, LASEPA General Manager Dr Babatunde Ajayi reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to protecting public health and preserving the environment. He urged business owners, facility operators, religious institutions, scrap dealers and residents across Lagos to adopt environmentally responsible practices and obtain the necessary permits and approvals.

Ajayi also called on operators to comply with applicable environmental regulations and cooperate with the agency’s efforts to promote a cleaner, healthier and more sustainable Lagos. LASEPA said it would continue enforcing environmental regulations across the state.
