Israel marks three years since October 7 @ttacks amid widespread memorials and anti-Government Protests

Israel observed a somber national day of remembrance on Wednesday, marking three years to the minute since the October 7, 2023, Hamas-led cross-border attack.
The solemn occasion was commemorated across more than 400 locations with a mix of moment-of-silence ceremonies, grassroots memorials, and renewed public demonstrations demanding political accountability.
The commemorations commenced precisely at 6:29 a.m. with a synchronized national moment of silence, mirroring the exact moment three years prior when gunmen breached border security barriers.
The 2023 assault resulted in the deaths of over 1,200 people including women, children, and elderly citizens, and the abduction of 251 individuals into the Gaza Strip.

A central gathering took place at the Nova music festival site near Re’im, where over 370 attendees were killed and 44 abducted. A subsequent national moment of reflection at noon saw widespread participation from public hospitals, local government municipalities, academic institutions, and private enterprises across the country.
The three-year milestone has sharply highlighted the division between official state functions and survivor-led grassroots movements.
While the government held official state ceremonies earlier in the week at Mount Herzl Cemetery in Jerusalem, most of Wednesday’s public gatherings were spearheaded by grassroots organizations, including the “Kumu” movement and the October Council, composed of victims’ families and survivors.
A primary focus of the grassroots gatherings remains the persistent demand for a formal state commission of inquiry, the highest legal investigative authority in Israel, to evaluate the systemic intelligence and political failures surrounding the attack. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has continuously resisted calls to convene such a panel.
Addressing the cabinet during state proceedings, Netanyahu emphasized the ongoing military posture, revealing that Israeli forces have neutralized approximately 4,000 of the estimated 6,000 militants involved in the initial breach, while signaling that operations would continue.
The broader conflict in Gaza has claimed over 74,000 Palestinian lives since October 2023, according to health authorities in the territory.
The anniversary falls less than three weeks before Israel’s October 27 national legislative election, where political responsibility for October 7 has emerged as the central campaign issue.
Key opposition figures, including former army chief Gadi Eisenkot and former Prime Minister Naftali Bennett, spent the day visiting impacted southern border communities while escalating criticisms against Netanyahu’s refusal to submit to an independent judicial inquiry ahead of the polls.
