Disquiet As Reform UK Leader Nigel Farage’s Ally Calls Kemi Badenoch ‘Nigerian Scammer’
● Badenock Hits Back: Britain’s Conservative Party Leader kicks, says “racist attacks” in opposition to her are “not going to work”
Leader of Britain’s Conservative Party, Kemi Badenoch, has declared that “racist attacks” in opposition to her is not going to succeed, after Raheem Kassam, a former aide to Nigel Farage, branded her a “Nigerian scammer”.
Badenoch made the remarks throughout an interview on ITV’s Good Morning Britain on Thursday, following a barrage of posts by Kassam criticising her background and character.
Kassam, who as soon as served as a key aide to Farage, had described Badenoch as an “unrelenting scammer” who has allegedly used her Nigerian heritage as a device to advance her political profession when it suited her.
In a separate submit that sparked outrage on-line, Kassam requested rhetorically how folks might nonetheless fall for “this Nigerian scammer?” and added, “Don’t give her your credit card number and bank account details”.
The feedback, extensively condemned as taking part in on an offensive stereotype about Nigerians, prompted questions on whether or not Reform UK and its allies had been resorting to racial dog-whistling in opposition to Britain’s most outstanding Black conservative politician.
Earlier this week, Nigel Farage, chief of Reform UK, was confronted about his former aide’s feedback throughout a BBC interview and was requested immediately if he thought-about the remarks racist.
Farage, in his response, tried to deflect the accusation by pointing to Kassam’s personal heritage, noting that his former aide is of Indian origin.
He argued that Kassam’s use of the phrase “Nigerian scammer” didn’t essentially imply the 2 phrases had been related in a racist sense, and as a substitute linked the phrase “scammer” to alleged dishonesty.
“It’s pretty clear that Kemi Badenoch often does not tell the truth about things that have happened and tries her very best to reinvent her past,” Farage mentioned in defence of his former aide’s outburst.

“The word scammer is about someone who doesn’t always tell the truth. There are quite a few instances over the last couple of months of her not telling the truth. There are two different words. One is scammer, and the other is Nigerian,” Farage defined.
While describing Kassam’s remark as “over the top”, Farage insisted he didn’t consider the comment was intentionally racist, and sought to distance himself from the controversy.
“He’s of Indian heritage. Ask him how he describes himself. Kemi Badenoch calls herself British; she grew up in Nigeria. By the way, this is not a debate I’m getting involved in,” Farage added.
But talking on Good Morning Britain, Badenoch disregarded the assault with defiance, saying the episode revealed the character of her political opponents relatively than any flaw on her half.
“I think it just shows the sort of people they are. I keep telling people that Reform politicians are not like Conservative politicians, and I want the Reform voters who were Conservatives to come home,” she mentioned.
She accused Reform of obsessing over private assaults as a substitute of coverage, saying, “They’re not talking about how they’re going to make people’s lives better. They’re spending most of their time attacking me. You’d think that I was the prime minister”.
In a robust closing line, Badenoch declared that weaponising her race would backfire, insisting that Britain’s tolerance would defeat such ways: “Britain is not a racist country and because it’s not a racist country, their racist attacks and using my race as an attack form is not going to work.”
