Azerbaijan targets deeper ties with Nigeria, Africa
Azerbaijan has identified stronger relations with African countries as a major foreign policy priority, with Nigeria emerging as an important partner in its efforts to deepen political, economic and people-to-people ties with the continent.
Azerbaijan’s Foreign Minister, Jeyhun Bayramov, stated this during a telephone conversation with the of Foreign Affairs Minister, Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, on Tuesday.
The conversation focused on strengthening Nigeria-Azerbaijan relations across the political, economic and social spheres, as well as expanding cooperation between the two countries at the multilateral level.
Bayramov told Odumegwu-Ojukwu that Azerbaijan remained committed to expanding its engagement with African countries, reaffirming Baku’s interest in further strengthening its bilateral relationship with Nigeria.
He also pointed to the importance of increasing people-to-people contact between Azerbaijan and Nigeria, citing initiatives such as Azerbaijan’s Intergovernmental Scholarship Programme as one avenue for deepening ties between the peoples of both countries.
The development provides a broader dimension to Nigeria-Azerbaijan relations, moving the focus beyond government-to-government engagement to opportunities for greater educational and social interaction.
Odumegwu-Ojukwu, for her part, highlighted what she described as the enormous opportunities available for enhanced cooperation between Nigeria and Azerbaijan.
The Nigerian minister welcomed programmes and partnerships that could translate the relationship between the two countries into tangible benefits for their citizens.
The two ministers also reviewed cooperation within multilateral platforms and reaffirmed their commitment to continued coordination in advancing issues of shared interest.
They exchanged views on regional and global developments and underscored the importance of sustained political consultations as a means of advancing their common objectives.
The latest engagement comes against the backdrop of Azerbaijan’s stated interest in strengthening its links with Africa, while Nigeria continues to engage partners beyond its traditional diplomatic relationships in pursuit of broader political, economic and development cooperation.
For Nigeria, the emphasis on education, people-to-people contact and practical bilateral partnerships provides potential avenues for expanding the relationship beyond formal diplomatic consultations.
