ACC condemns killing of journalist, demands investigation

The African Action Congress (AAC) has strongly condemned the gruesome killing of Ibrahim Khalil Dan Shagamu, the popular Kano-based social media influencer, political commentator and government critic, whose life was brutally cut short at his residence in Gaida, Kumbotso local government area of Kano State.

This was made known to newsmen in Kano Thursday by the vice presidential candidate of the ACC, Haruna Garba Magashi.

“This is not merely another murder, it is a deeply disturbing tragedy made even more painful by the fact that the deceased had reportedly raised an alarm over threats to his life and publicly appealed to the Kano State Government and security agencies, particularly the Nigeria Police, to protect him.

“He asked for protection. He warned the authorities that his life was in danger. Yet, that protection apparently never came. Today, he is dead.

“That raises a fundamental question: What was the government waiting for?

“A government that cannot protect a citizen who has expressly reported threats to his life has a serious responsibility to explain what happened and why adequate preventive measures were not taken.

“As a political party committed to the protection of human rights, justice and the rule of law, the AAC considers the killing of Ibrahim Khalil Dan Shagamu unacceptable and deeply troubling.

“We therefore condemn the Kano State Government and the security agencies for the apparent failure to act decisively when credible concerns about his safety had already been raised.

“We also caution against any attempt to dismiss this killing as an ordinary criminal incident without thoroughly investigating the circumstances surrounding it, including the threats previously made against the deceased” he stated.

He finally called on the authorities to ensure a full and transparent investigation on the murder.

“The AAC demands an immediate, thorough and transparent investigation into the killing” , he said.
