“It was the handwork of a few disgruntled fellows in the market and arrests have been made” — Lagos police speaks on protest against Chinese traders

The Lagos State Police Command has described a protest at the Trade Fair Market in Lagos involving some traders and Chinese nationals as the handiwork of a few disgruntled individuals.

Speaking after inspecting the situation, the police commissioner said peace and security had been restored in the market, adding that some of those involved had been questioned and arrested.

“It was the handwork of a few miscreants, a few disgruntled fellows in the market, a handful of them that went the other way, and they have been questioned and arrested,” he said.

He assured Lagos residents that there was no fight at the market and that business activities were ongoing peacefully.

The president of the market’s trade association, Mr Thangozi Emechembe, also described the incident as a minor protest which was brought under control immediately.

He said there was no ongoing dispute between Nigerian and Chinese traders at the market, adding that the association had met with relevant authorities to address the situation.

“We are just here to let the community, Lagosians and Nigerians and everybody around the world to know that here in Trade Fair Market, you don’t have any problem between the traders, Chinese and the Nigerians here. Everything is fine,” he said.

A Chinese trader at the market also assured that business activities had resumed, saying the market was open and peaceful.

He described Nigeria as a big market and encouraged customers and traders to continue coming to the market to do business.
