The Anambra State Police Command has taken a 36-year-old woman, Anulika Onyeanusia, into custody following allegations that she subjected her children to sexual abuse and used the material generated from the alleged acts for online financial gains.

The case came to the attention of the police after a disturbing video surfaced online, prompting an investigation by the command. Police operatives subsequently located the suspect in Onitsha and rescued four children found in her care.

The children, aged between two and nine years, are currently receiving protection as investigators work to establish the circumstances surrounding the allegations and determine whether other persons were involved. Blueprint reports

The command’s spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the arrest, saying the development followed intelligence gathered from material circulating on social media.

According to the police, items considered relevant to the investigation were also recovered from the location where the suspect was arrested.

The investigation is expected to determine the extent of the alleged abuse, how long it may have continued and whether the online material was produced and distributed with the involvement of other individuals.

Suspect allegedly made money from material

Details emerging from the preliminary investigation suggest that the allegations may have involved the commercial exploitation of one of the children.

Reports on the case indicated that the suspect allegedly admitted to investigators that she had produced material involving her eight-year-old daughter and subsequently uploaded it online.

She reportedly told investigators that she received financial returns from the distribution of the material, with one account putting the amount earned at about $300.

The allegation has raised concerns over the increasing risks children face from adults who exploit digital platforms for financial benefits.

Investigators are expected to examine the digital trail surrounding the material to establish where it was uploaded, who may have accessed or distributed it and whether the suspect received assistance from other people.

The police have not indicated that the investigation has been concluded, and the allegations against the suspect remain subject to further investigation and possible prosecution.

Four children rescued

Police intervention in the matter also led to the rescue of four children aged two, three, six and nine.

The command said the children were taken into protective care following the discovery, while arrangements are expected to be made for their welfare as the investigation continues.

The rescue has also prompted investigators to examine whether the alleged abuse was an isolated incident or part of a wider pattern.

Authorities are expected to interview relevant persons and examine available evidence to determine what happened to each of the children and whether any of them may have been exposed to abuse.

Because the case involves minors, their identities have not been disclosed.

Child protection experts generally stress the importance of shielding victims of abuse from further exposure, particularly on social media, where sensitive material can continue circulating long after an investigation has commenced.

Husband questioned

The police have also reportedly questioned the suspect’s husband as part of efforts to establish whether he had any knowledge of the alleged activities.

His questioning does not, by itself, establish involvement in the alleged offences, but investigators are expected to determine whether he knew about the activities or had any connection to the production or distribution of the material.

The police investigation could therefore extend beyond the immediate circumstances of the woman’s arrest if evidence points to the involvement of other persons.

Investigators are also expected to examine electronic devices and other materials recovered during the operation as they piece together the events surrounding the allegations.

Police order thorough investigation

Commissioner of Police in Anambra State, CP Nnanna Oji Ama, has directed that the matter be thoroughly investigated.

The police leadership also stressed the need to protect the rescued children while the investigation is ongoing.

The command has described the allegations as unacceptable and said the circumstances surrounding the case would be properly examined before the appropriate legal steps are taken.

The investigation comes amid growing concern over the exploitation of minors through digital platforms, where abusive content can be circulated rapidly and potentially reach audiences far beyond the original perpetrators.

For victims, the consequences can extend beyond the immediate abuse, particularly when images or videos involving them are shared repeatedly online.

Investigation continues

Police investigators are now expected to establish the complete circumstances surrounding the allegations and determine whether additional suspects should be brought into the investigation.

They will also examine the financial dimension of the alleged online activity and determine whether money was received from the distribution of the material.

The authorities are expected to work with relevant child protection and social welfare agencies to ensure that the rescued children receive appropriate care while the legal process unfolds.

The police have urged members of the public to report suspected cases of child abuse to law enforcement authorities rather than merely circulate sensitive material online.

As the investigation progresses, the authorities will have to establish the facts surrounding the allegations and determine the appropriate charges, if sufficient evidence is found to support prosecution.
