Wike Tackles APC Governors: ‘You Are Politically Lazy’

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has accused governors elected on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) of being “politically lazy” over their opposition to his emerging Rainbow Coalition ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Wike made the remark while responding to the governors’ position that they would neither participate in, support nor endorse any political alliance capable of undermining President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid or affecting APC candidates at any level.

Speaking during an interview on Arise Television’s Prime Time programme on Tuesday, Wike said his decision to support President Tinubu did not amount to abandoning his political party or preventing other political parties from fielding candidates in the 2027 elections.

The former Rivers State governor specifically took exception to the position of the APC governors, arguing that they should not invoke Tinubu’s political interests to justify disagreements arising from his political activities.

“They are politically lazy. When you have your local problems, don’t use Mr President as your excuse,” Wike said.

The FCT Minister said the disagreement between him and some political actors did not begin with his decision to support Tinubu.

According to him, he had faced opposition from some quarters during his tenure as governor of Rivers State and later after his appointment as FCT Minister.

“This thing did not start today. It started at a ministerial position. They were not happy that I was Minister of FCT. Also, they were unhappy when I was governor,” he said.

Wike also suggested that some of those criticising his political decisions might have a different understanding of the situation if they had access to the information available to him.

His comments come amid heightened political manoeuvring ahead of the 2027 elections, with political actors and parties exploring alliances and realignments across the country.

The APC governors, led by their chairman and Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodimma, had earlier opposed any alliance that could threaten Tinubu’s re-election campaign or the electoral interests of APC candidates.

The governors’ position has put them at odds with Wike’s efforts to build political relationships outside the traditional boundaries of his party as the 2027 political season gathers momentum.

Wike, however, maintained that supporting Tinubu did not mean that he had surrendered his political identity or accepted a situation where opposition parties would be prevented from contesting elections.
